Volunteer Opportunities
Information Services:
Travelers are thrilled to encounter local volunteers who are available
to simply talk and answer their questions. Information Services volunteers
offer advice and answer questions from HI-San Diego, Downtown hostel guests
in the 3rd Floor Common Room. To make your job easier, we have maps, bus
schedules, brochures, and other resources available. We have morning and
afternoon shifts available.
Tijuana Orientation/Walking Tour:
Help travelers discover the culture and attractions of Tijuana, Mexico.
Present an orientation at the hostel using a slide show we‘ve prepared,
or lead a walking tour of the Tijuana area. Volunteers for this program
are required to attend a half-day training session before leading a Tijuana
orientation or walking tour.
Local Guide:
Every week, we organize trips to San Diego‘s most intriguing neighborhoods,
attractions, and special events. The most successful and meaningful trips
are those led by local residents!
Cultural Kitchen:
Friendships and cultural exchange flourish over good food and conversation.
Our Cultural Kitchen program is a group dinner exploring culture through
cuisine.
Speakers Bureau:
If you are enthusiastic about travel, and want to educate others who are
interested but don’t have as much experience, you might want to
get involved with our Speakers Bureau. Presentations include “World
Travel 101,” “Women Traveling Solo,” “Demystifying
Hostels,” and other topics of interest to the local community. This
is a wonderful way to share you passion for travel!
Group Services and Community Programs:
We work with large groups coming to our hostel for educational purposes
and also with the community. Help us coordinate local kids meeting kids
from other places and interacting over a meal, or meeting a hosteller
and discussing travel. Be one of our community team to bring alive our
mission!
