Welcome!
A warm welcome to all Hostelling International volunteers.
Our volunteers, form the foundation of the hostel’s wide range of cultural and recreational programs. Volunteers contribute a tremendous amount of time and energy to the organization. In fact, without our team of dedicated volunteers, programs simply would not occur.
Volunteer participation improves the quality of the travel experience for our hostel guests, and helps open doors for international travelers into the local community. Here are some examples:
- Each Tuesday, Eric leads a walking tour to Balboa Park, showing them the architecture and telling them the story of the Park, the gardens, and the free museums.
- On a Thursday night, Sabine cooks dinner at the hostel with guests, teaching them about the cuisine, and facilitating cultural exchange and discussion.
- Nola volunteers Friday mornings, helping guests plan their stay in San Diego.
In these ways, the traveler’s experience is enhanced, and they interact more deeply with their environment. This cross cultural exchange brings greater meaning to the HI mission, and will travel with that person around the world: “to help all people, especially the young, gain a greater understanding of the world and its people through hostelling.”
