Girl Scouts
Girl Scouts and Hostelling International have like-minded missions to encourage girls to explore and learn about the world through travel. The San Diego Imperial Council of Girl Scouts USA has named HI-San Diego hostels the “Official Accommodations” for Girl Scouts traveling to San Diego, and we offer a variety of programs for both local Girl Scouts and visiting troops:
World Travel 101 for Girl Scouts
Planning a trip, or need help getting started? HI-USA has created a special workshop just for Girl Scouts, to help girls prepare to travel responsibly and safely. Topics include trip planning, packing, budgeting, safety, cultural awareness and more. Workshops are free, though registration is required. Please RSVP to programs@sandiegohostels.org or call Laura at (619) 338-9981, ext. 14.
Upcoming Workshops:
Sunday, October 5 @ 3:00 pm
Florence Burnham Hall, Balboa Park
Cultural Kitchen
The Cultural Kitchen program exposes girls to the world beyond their communities and teaches cultural understanding. Through hands-on activities and an overnight stay at the HI-San Diego hostel, girls will:
-
* Learn about cultural understanding
* Explore a country of their choice
* Work together to cook an international meal in the hostel
* Share a meal with travelers from around the world
* Creatively present what they learned
* Experience San Diego from a traveler’s point of view
* Earn the “Discover the World: Girl Scouts Go Hostelling” patch
Fall, winter, and spring program dates are available. Want to find our more? Join us on Sunday, August 3 for our Cultural Kitchen Leader Preview Day to see the program in action! From 1-3pm, a local Girl Scout troop will be sharing what they learned during the program. The event includes an international meal, cultural presentation, and tour of the HI- Point Loma hostel. This event is free, but registration is required by July 27.
“Discover the World” Patch
Hostelling International and Girl Scouts of America have created a special patch for your troop to earn during your hostel stay. We are here to help your troop complete the activities (plus any other itinerary plans you would like to create), and at the end of your stay the scouts will have earned the hostelling patch!
